APPLE HILL, Ontario – Halloween is behind us, but the pumpkins remain.

Bee Meadow Farms in Apple Hill offers a friendly way to dispose of the hard-orange fruit.

The farm accepts donations of used pumpkins, carved or whole, fresh or not so fresh.

“We give them to the goats and horses and chickens, but the pigs really love them,” said Natalie Rowe of Bee Meadow Farm.  “One pig will be running around with an entire pumpkin in his mouth, then another will come up and try and steal it. So it is not only good for the animals, but it is also good entertainment.”

Bee Meadow Farm rescues animals, mostly from the SD&G OSPCA and they have been collecting pumpkins after Halloween for the past three years. Rowe said that last year they received about 100 pumpkins.

Rowe said that if someone wanted to donate a pumpkin, they should contact Bee Meadow Farm through their Facebook page to setup a drop off or pick-up time.

“Pumpkins are good for everyone and they’re a healthy treat for our animals,” she said. “I really appreciate it when people take the time to do this.”
